Poika by Sabah is a powerful story about a land and its people brilliantly told by a master storyteller. The language is so extraordinarily simple that it is amazing. At the same time, the use of the local dialect in vogue in the particular area of South Kerala where the story unfolds, adds greatly to the beauty of the book. Kudos to the author for his contribution to the preservation of this particular dialect of malayalam which has not so far found a place in literature. The comedy in the book is subtle and is through characterization, situation as well as language. The narrative travels through the lives of men, women and children as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life in Mohiyuddeen Poika holding onto the truth of their own beliefs. The deft use of imagery brings the land and its people so vividly to life that the reader sees it all as clearly as if he himself was a participant in the action. The characters and their life stay with us long after we have finished reading the novel. Poika is a valuable contribution to the corpus of Malayalam literature and a ‘must read’for all book lovers.
