I purchased this book immediately after the release of the movie in last December. Mamangam' was a trade festival in kerala which was conducted by Zamorins of Calicut from 1st century to 18th century. The story revolves around two warriors who belongs to the 'Chandroth' family which regularly sends the best warriors in their family to serve 'Vellatiri' for the purpose of assassinating his rival Zamorins and repossessing the lost authority of conducting the festival of 'Mamangam'.The two warriors are Chandroth Chandunni and Chandroth Panikkar. In their journey to accomplish their mission, they meet a mysterious man and the story thus takes a major turn after they meet that mysterious man.The story revolves around what happened later after their meeting with this man... The story is narrated in a non linear manner which starts merely as a crime investigation and further moves to bigger tales of history and myths and increases it's dark tone. There are elements of magic and sorcery in the story but at no point we will feel them to be exaggeration.The story takes place in 16th century when kerala and India was going under a major political and social change.There is also a discussion about the changing world and the future of the lands.There are characters who are Portuguese,Dutch and Arab to denote this change of politics and power.The narration takes us through various lands across the seas and shows us a wide angle on the happenings across the world of the 16th century.We should appreciate the author's efforts in researching about the past history of kerala and combining all those elements into a single novel. I recommend this book if you are a true lover of ancient history and ancient warriors.
