Book Summary

The Lament of the Dusky Lord, is the translation from its Malayalam Kavya Akhyayika Shyama Madhavam. The fifteen chapters of the novel in poetic verse revolve around Lord Krishna and the lives of those who have come across him during his earthly sojourn. It is the touching portrayal of the travails of a solitary soul and the rare courage with which he deals with life. It begins in a dramatically poignant and pensive mood when the lord is hit by Vyadha’s fatal arrow, and ends in his swargarohana, in between which he lapses into a series of confessions and repentance. The poet takes extra care in ensuring that the creative imagination doesn’t cross over to the territory of iconoclasm or blasphemy. Lament of the Dusky Lord offers a wide spectrum of Sanskritised diction, Chhandas, Alankaaras and metric patterns, such as dandakas, on the one hand and slokas on the other. It also brings out the genuine concern of the lonely inner voice of the legendary hero, which, according to the poet does not represent a series of ecstasies, as many believe, but agonies.
